Who we are
Bay Area Landscape is published by a small editorial team of garden writers and researchers based in Northern California. We are homeowners and gardeners first — people who have built ponds, ripped out lawns, and interviewed dozens of contractors across the region. We publish under a team byline because our guides are researched and reviewed collectively.
How we research our guides
Every guide starts with the specifics of this region: coastal fog, summer heat inland, clay and sandy soils, drought restrictions, and local wildlife. We draw on published horticultural and university extension guidance, conversations with working contractors and designers, and site visits to finished projects around Santa Cruz County and the wider Bay Area. Guides are reviewed before publication and updated when local conditions or best practices change.
How our comparisons work
Our comparison pages rank real local firms on the factors homeowners actually weigh: specialty fit, craftsmanship, longevity of past work, and service area. Every firm listed has genuine strengths, and every firm — including the top-ranked one — has trade-offs we state plainly. No company can pay to be included, ranked, or removed. If we get a fact wrong, we correct it.
