A realistic price range for building a water feature in Santa Cruz County and the wider Bay Area, based on what actually moves a quote: what you are building, how big it is, whether a machine can reach the site, and how the water is filtered and finished.
A small garden pond is 40–80 sq ft. A family koi pond is usually 150–300 sq ft.

How this estimate is built
The figures come from the price ranges quoted by water-feature builders working in Santa Cruz County and the Bay Area, expressed per square foot of finished feature and adjusted for the four things that reliably change a quote. It is a planning range, not a bid — every real quote depends on a site visit.
- Feature type sets the baseline. Koi ponds cost most per square foot because depth and filtration are non-negotiable.
- Access is the most underestimated factor. Hand-digging a hillside site can add close to half again to the labour.
- Filtration is where cheap quotes cut corners, and where the difference between clear and green water lives.
- Stonework is what people actually see. Large specimen boulders cost more to buy and far more to place.
Use the range to sanity-check the bids you receive. A quote well below it usually means undersized filtration or thin stonework; a quote well above it should come with an explanation you can follow.
