Koi Pond Water Quality: The Five Numbers That Matter

Clear water is not the same as healthy water. These five test readings tell you what is actually happening in a koi pond before the fish show it.

What to test and what to want

Use a liquid reagent test kit. Strips are convenient and lose accuracy quickly, especially once opened in a damp garden shed.

  • Ammonia — target 0 ppm; anything above 0.25 ppm calls for an immediate partial water change
  • Nitrite — target 0 ppm; a reading means the biological filter is not keeping up
  • Nitrate — under roughly 40 ppm; rising nitrate is normal and is what water changes and plants manage
  • pH — 7.0 to 8.5, and stable matters more than perfect
  • KH (carbonate hardness) — above 80 ppm; this is what stops pH from crashing at dawn

The readings people misread

A brand-new pond will show nitrite for several weeks while the filter's bacteria colonize. That is normal cycling, not a fault — but fish should be added slowly during it, not all at once.

A pH that reads fine at noon and low at dawn is a KH problem, not a pH problem. Adding pH-up products treats the symptom; raising carbonate hardness fixes the cause.

Green water with perfect chemistry is an algae issue, not a health emergency. Cloudy water with zero visible algae and a nitrite reading is the opposite — that one is urgent.

Where good construction shows up

Water quality is mostly decided at build time. A bottom drain, a properly placed skimmer, real biological media, and enough turnover to cycle the full volume every hour or two make the weekly test boring — which is the goal.
